1st Day of Second Trial

April 14th, 2008

Dear Friends,

Yesterday was the first day of the second trial of our former nanny. We did not attend the proceedings although we had many of our friends at the court house. We want to keep a daily diary of the events leading up to the start of testimony to document everything for people around the world to see the effects of what happens in these types of cases. The days proceedings were to prepare the jury questionnaire to be handed to all of the potential jurors who will sit on the case. The day was short and will begin again Tuesday April 15th.

Second Trial

April 14th, 2008

Dear Friends & Family,

The second trial to prosecute our former nanny begins tomorrow April 14, 2008. We are almost 2 years come May 13 when Hannah didn’t come home from Sutter Memorial Hospital in Sacramento Ca. We as a family have been stuck in a very difficult position because we haven’t been given the true opportunity to live on from that day. We continue to take one day at a time in our quest to seek justice for our angel who deserves nothing less.

The trial will be located at The Historical Court House in Auburn Ca. We are very proud of the prosecutors preparedness leading up to the second trial. We will keep you advised of the trial as it progresses.

Dear Friends,

I am proud to share with you our dear friend and mentor in life Mr Daryl Gibbs. This article says it all about the man who fights for the little ones who cant speak for themselves. Our daughters were killed in the hands of our caregivers. The ones who were suppose to love and care for them. Our mission is to spread the word about Shaken Baby syndrome. Please help our mission and make sure you tell someone who is in the care of an infant or toddler that what ever they do “DON’T SHAKE BABIES”. Daryl stayed with our family during our trial and aided us in the most difficult of times. In this photo you can just tell how hurt, strong and determined he looks. I will never stop from making certain we do everything in our power to protect children from being abused.

California State Bill 825

January 30th, 2008

Dear Friends,

We wanted to share this with you as we get closer and closer to California State Bill 825. This Bill will implement the Hospital based program that distributes materials to every new birth in California. The bill will eventually be in every Hospital in the state. Our family continues to gain strength and courage in our efforts to educate the Country on Shaken Baby Syndrome.

The photos are from last years Bill attempting to establish greater protection of our little ones. The Bill sponsored by Sally Leiber of San Jose did not make it very far here in Sacramento. We have found out that the process of passing laws is as important as the law itself. As a family we are making an impact on the system and inspiring those around us to take this issue as serious as it is. We continue to work with the District Atty’s Office as they prepare for a massive prosecution this time of our former nanny. We will continue to let you know of the efforts we are taking and the success we have. Please remember the most important thing of all. Don’t Shake Babies.

Happy Birthday Hannah …

December 28th, 2007

At a time like this, there is no sense of rationality or normality. As we find ourselves in a landscape that is completely unfamiliar, we realize that our lives will never be the same. When God took our Hannah Rose, he also took a major part of our souls. Hannah died in a violent and tragic death in the hands of our babysitter. Hannah will never learn to talk. She will never start school. She will never get married and have children of her own. She will never know all of the wonderous joys of this world. She was robbed of her life!

As parents, it’s our jobs to love and protect our babies… this we can not provide for Hannah anymore. But she will not die in vain. It is now our mission in life to prevent this from ever happening again to any child! With your help, we can join together and educate parents all over the world… Who is watching your baby? Do you really know them? Do they know NOT TO SHAKE YOUR BABY!? Hannah Rose Juceam is now an angel.

The Hannah Rose Foundation was formed to raise money to educate people about the fatal consequences of shaking your baby, or better known as Shaken Baby Syndrome.

From her death, many, many lives WILL be saved!

Next Phase Starts 12/10/07

The second phase starts Monday Dec 10th at the jail court in auburn Ca to determine when the next trial will take place. We are prepared once again to do what ever it takes to see that justice is served for our daughter. The district atty is more then prepared for this fight and will no doubt be successful in the end. We are always looking for as much support as possible knowing that it takes an emotional toll on our family and friends. Please feel free to call or email anytime. We are stronger today then ever before.

The California International Marathon was a big success.

December 3rd, 2007

The California International Marathon was a big success. We have raised money for the Placer County Child Abuse Prevention Center & The Hannah Rose Foundation. The run was fantastic and we finished in 4 hours on the button. I have to thank Martha Dominguez, Mark Dewitt, Troy Mulert for their training and commitment to our cause. Our focus remains clear on raising the level of awareness on Shaken Baby Syndrome. If you could please go to www.runforhannah.com and pledge whatever amount you can for our Run. Please remember that it’s 100% tax deduct able and it will go to a great cause. We are sending 50% of the donations to Placer County Child Abuse Prevention Center to help stop Child Abuse and aid them in Preventing Shaken Baby Syndrome. I ran the last leg of the Marathon’s relay race at approx. 10 minutes per mile for 5.7 miles. Our runners were inspired by Hannah and each ran 7 miles and 5.9 miles to total 26.2 miles in our first run together.

The run was dedicated to Hannah after Adam Horwitz my best friend ran in Los Angeles last March in the LA Marathon and pushed us to take further action in ways we never though we could. Adam ran the full 26.2 miles and was hospitalized after severe muscle breakdown and had a complete recovery in just days after the race. I still think he is our Hero and one of my biggest mentors in life. Please help us if you can as we really want to assist our community in the fight against Shaken Baby Syndrome.

Thank you,
Scott Juceam

Disappointing 1st Trial … Prepared for the Next!

November 5th, 2007

Dear Friends,

We are disappointed in the outcome of the “first trial” and are now very prepared for the “second one.” Hannah would be proud of the fight we have given for her. We are moving forward with the fight against people who shake babies and people who say it can’t happen this way. We will keep everyone informed of our progress. Keep an eye out for a website that is going to implicate the scam doctors who came here and lied on the stand for a paycheck. I promise you we will not let them off the hook. One of the doctors is already being looked into for lying and distorting his credentials to Sutter Hospital. Whatever legal channels we have available for Hannah we will exercise her rights. We continue to ask you to let the District Atty’s office know that you want this person prosecuted for Killing Hannah on May 11Th. We are feeling very confidant that the proper outcome is only months away. We are starting our life after this trial with hope and promise of a positive future for Jordan & Benji.

Hannah Juceam Death Case Ends in Mistrial

November 1st, 2007

The Placer County trial to determine whether 16-month-old Hannah Rose Juceam was shaken to death ended Wednesday in a hung jury, with jurors split ten to two in favor of guilt.

“On May 11, 2006, Hannah’s life was robbed from her. And here we are just a little over a year later, and she just got robbed again,” said an angry Rick Perry, one of the jurors in favor of a guilty verdict.

Jurors notified the court at about 11:40 a.m. that they were deadlocked. A hearing was held at 1 p.m. and after Judge Robert McElhany polled each juror and they agreed they couldn’t reach a verdict, the judge declared a mistrial.

The jury was deliberating charges of second degree murder and child abuse causing death or great bodily injury against Juceam’s nanny Veronica Salcedo. Salcedo was accused of shaking the toddler at the Juceams’ home in Roseville while she watched the family’s three children on May 11, 2006.

As the two holdout jurors left court with a deputy escort, not commenting to reporters, other jurors hugged and cried with each other and the child’s parents, Scott and Lorena Juceam, inside the courthouse.

“We couldn’t get justice. We couldn’t get justice for the family. And it’s just, I wish we could’ve,” said an emotional Jessica Bardini, another juror.

After Hannah Rose Juceam was taken to the hosptial, diagnosed with severe brain swelling, she died two days later after being taken off life support. The crux of the argument was whether or not the cause of death was shaken baby syndrome or an undiagnosed illness.

That defense of a possible illness is what hung up the jury, according to the foreman, Don Locascio of Granite Bay.

“Maybe some of the medical evidence, maybe there was a possible injury before the situation. Maybe how law enforcement handled the interview of the suspect,” he said. But he and other jurors say they held no ill will toward the two holdout jurors.

Scott and Lorena Juceam expressed those same feelings of apppreciation for all the jurors, but the child’s father said, “We will try Veronica Martinez Salcedo again.”

“We respect their decision,” said Lorena Juceam of the jury, “But obviously whoever didn’t agree with them (the majority) it’s because they didn’t see the facts.”

The jury was widely split early in deliberations, coming back after the first two days and saying they were deadlocked on October 22. It’s now been disclosed that first split was seven to five in favor of guilt, so during the next wee the jury came closer to agreement. The jury deliberated 10 days in all.

During Wednesday’s hearing, Salcedo sat at the defense table sobbing. The baby’s mother Lorena was also crying, as were two of jurors.

“This is a very emotional case for people. And ya know, I believe she’s innocent. I will always believe she’s innocent,” said Salcedo’s attorney Mary Beth Acton. “If we have to try this case again, we will.”

Salcedo’s relatives left court with little comment, one woman simply saying, “God is with us.”

Under the law, prosecutors have the unilateral right to decide whether or not to have a re-trial on the same charges. The case comes back to court in early December, and the decision on re-trial will most likely be made by then.

“It’s an emotional moment right now,” said Placer County District Attorney Brad Fenocchio. “We need some time to step back, take a look, make that decision at a later time.” Prosecutors spent time interviewing some of the jurors about the case immediately after the mistrail was declared.

Salcedo remains in custody pending that decision. She’s been held since the child’s death in lieu of $1 million bond. She’s also on an immigration hold because she’s an undocumented Mexican national.
