AUBURN, Calif.—A nanny who was tried twice on charges of shaking a 15-month-old baby to death has been deported to Mexico.

Immigration officials say Veronica Martinez Salcedo was ordered deported August 6 after prosecutors decided not to pursue a third trial on assault charges in the case.

Prosecutors say Salcedo shook 15-month-old Hannah Juceam so hard she suffered a fatal brain injury. Salcedo’s attorney says the child died of a stroke caused by a blood clot.

Two separate juries deadlocked on the case.

Salcedo had spent the last two years in jail because she was an illegal immigrant.
